Directed by Richard Dutcher (2001)
With
Richard Dutcher, Matthew A. Brown, Wilford Brimley, Carrie Morgan
In Richard Dutcher’s portrait of Mormon life, an idyllic Utah town faces its first murder, and the possibility that the killer is one of its own. In addition to directing, Dutcher stars as Wes Clayton, the town sheriff and an LDS bishop, whose investigation forces him to navigate the uneasy intersection of faith, community, and justice. With its picturesque small-town setting and deliberately restrained performances, the film gradually turns the familiar rhythms of community life into a tense, morally charged mystery. Brigham City serves as an intriguing moment in the filmography of Dutcher, who was deemed the “The Godfather of Mormon Cinema” by Deseret News before leaving the church in 2007.
