Two short features offer disparate visions of what the future may hold. In Chris Marker’s poetically haunting La Jetée, a stylistically revolutionary 1962 time-travel fable conveyed entirely in stills, a prisoner in post-apocalyptic Paris is sent to the past and future in search of a way to save the world. In The Last Angel of History, a 1996 hybrid documentary by Ghanaian-born British artist and writer John Akomfrah, a time-traipsing “Data Thief” conducts archeological digs in search of links between Black music, Pan-African culture, and future technology, bolstered with commentary from George Clinton, Greg Tate, Octavia E. Butler, Derrick May, and other prominent figures.
