black& loving, a film program created by Tyler Green and Sokhna Samb to celebrate Black and queer artists, returns to BAM with The Artist Way, commemorating creators whose works have defined American culture and influenced today’s Black artists. Chronicles of a Lying Spirit (by Kelly Gabron), directed by Cauleen Smith, offers an experimental reintegration of Black women into history. Looking for "Looking for Langston" was made by Ada M. Patterson after learning about, but being unable to see, the classic Isaac Julien work. Finally Julien’s critically acclaimed Looking for Langston explores the personal life of the beloved poet and activist Langston Hughes, incorporating archival footage from the Harlem Renaissance. These filmmakers situate their works to address the Black experience through the lens of gender and sexuality, as well as issues arising from that intersection.
