Garod Collective Presents: Posthumous Traces

Wed, Sep 16, 2026
    Part of
  • BAM Film 2026
Garod Collective presents five short films by Armenian women spanning three decades, exploring themes of family, parenthood, and identity through the lens of loss.

These filmmakers depict loss in many forms: from the surreal experience of postpartum depression, to a daughter watching her mother slowly slip away, to a cemetery groundskeeper grieving his own past. Using experimental and conventional narratives, the filmmakers present mythical images of a homeland constantly out of reach, and imagine the lives of fathers they have never known. An exercise in remembering, these works trace intimate threads of connection in danger of fading away.

Founded by Cynthia Nahhas and Nanor Vosgueritchian, Garod Collective hosts Armenian cultural events in New York City, acting as a space to introduce, build, or revitalize connections to Armenian culture, language, and tradition.

Followed by a Q&A with Anahid Yahjian, director of  Domestic Demon

Domestic Demon (2026)
Dir. Anahid Yahjian
7min; Digital

A housebound mother's hunger for agency and control among the mutating textures and temporalities of her home sets off an uncanny transformation in this portrait of matrescence and post-partum depression.

World (2020)
Dir. Christine Haroutounian
22min; Digital

A young woman in the Armenian countryside faces the final days of her mother’s life.

Girl From Moush (1994)
Dir. Garine Torossian
6min; Digital

This poetic montage weaves through a mythical projection of Armenia, part truth and part rendering of the filmmaker’s subconscious vision.

General Cleaning (2020)
Dir. Naira Sargsyan
26min; Digital

An old groundskeeper embarks on a journey of memory and loss as he cleans his village home.

Farewell (2004)
Dir. Maria Saakyan
27min; Digital

In an act of construction and imagining, Saakyan reckons with the loss of a father she never knew, who committed suicide at the age of 21.
