Still the most recent movie to win all of the “Big Five” categories at the Academy Awards (and the only horror film to win Best Picture), Demme’s haunting psychological investigation not only lingers in the minds of its viewers, but in the cultural imaginary of American horror cinema. Alongside career-defining performances from a steadfast Foster and skin-crawling bravura depiction of psychopathy from Hopkins, a spunky little Bichon Frisé Darla (as Buffalo Bill’s companion Precious) delivers the punctuation to one of the film’s most famous lines: “It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again!”
