Playback: The Battle of Algiers

Programmed for Playback: The Brooklyn Watch Party by award-winning actor John Turturro, the groundbreaking and profoundly influential docudrama The Battle of Algiers (1966), directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, portrays the Algerian fight for independence from France in the 1950s as violence and brutality escalate. The screening will be followed by a talkback with John Turturro and guests to be announced.

John Turturro is a Brooklyn-raised actor, writer, and director with one of the most distinctive careers in American film, spanning four decades from his defining collaborations with Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever) and the Coen brothers (Barton Fink, which won him Best Actor at Cannes, Miller's Crossing, The Big Lebowski) to blockbusters and acclaimed TV. He has also directed his own features, including Romance & Cigarettes and Fading Gigolo.
