Directed by Chantal Akerman (1975)
With Delphine Seyrig, Jan Decorte, Henri Storck, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, Yves Bical
A singular and uniquely influential moment in film history, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles meticulously details, with a sense of impending doom, the daily routine of a middle-aged widow. In its enormous spareness, Akerman’s film seems simple, but it encompasses an entire world. Both an exacting character study and one of cinema’s most hypnotic and complete depictions of space and time, the slice-of-life narrative, composed of long takes and lingering sequences, ranked first in 2022’s Sight and Sound critic’s poll of the greatest films of all time.
