Candyman

Jul 2—8, 2026
    Part of
  • Spectres, Devils, and Bad Blood in Old America
  • and
  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by Bernard Rose (1992)
With Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd, Kasi Lemmons
This quintessential ‘90s fixture of contemporary horror follows a Chicago graduate student who, in the midst of studying urban folklore, accidentally summons a hook-handed ghost who appears whenever his name is chanted 5 times in front of the mirror. While the film’s campy horror thrills inspired a bevy of sequels, the original displays a heftier moral timbre: exploring the legacy of slavery in the US through the lingering story of the Candyman’s initial demise.
