The Island Closest to Heaven

Spurred by a legend shared by her late father (portrayed by Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukihiro Takahashi), a Japanese teenager travels to New Caledonia in pursuit of the fabled “island closest to heaven.” In one of Obayashi’s most stunningly beautiful films, the young Mari finds indigo waters, pale white beaches, and encounters with locals that send her on a path towards a different destination: self-discovery.
