As an illusion, a transformative act, and a collective experience, cinema is magic. Early film alchemized technology with a tradition of theatrical tricks, stage performances, and occult spirituality, conjuring worlds out of flickers of light. Since its origin, the medium has continued to mine assumptions about reality and gaps in perception, revealing new truths through hallucination and manipulation. Guest-curated by Yasmina Price, BAM’s sixth annual collaboration with Triple Canopy brings together protocinematic experiments, reconfigured folklore and rituals, avant-garde animation, and audiovisual sleights of hand to explore cinematic enchantment.
