In honor of his 90th birthday—and as part of Bang on a Can’s Long Play Festival—BAM is hosting a Steve Reich marathon on Sunday, May 3 to celebrate the work of one of contemporary music’s most influential pioneers. Beloved longtime BAM and Bang on a Can collaborators Sō Percussion anchor an all-afternoon extravaganza, performing Reich’s genre-defying classics Sextet, Piano Phase, and Four Organs. Experience Electric Counterpoint as you have never heard it before—performed live by the New York ensemble Dither with 13 electric guitarists. Embark on a journey through the work of a composer who altered the trajectory of modern music.
This marathon, showcasing once at 2pm and again at 6pm, will only be accessible as part of Bang on a Can's Long Play Festival, a four-day musical rollercoaster of over 70 concerts hosted at a variety of venues throughout Brooklyn from April 30th through May 3rd. This year’s festival—which The New York Times deemed the “most important classical music festival in New York City” in 2023—will feature Philip Glass' Glassworks with Bang on a Can All-Stars, Quatour Bozzini plays Éliane Radigue, John Luther Adams' Crossing Open Ground (in Fort Greene Park), Miles Okazaki plays Thelonious Monk, Exceptet plays Vangelis, and much more.
