Director Jane Campion interrogates erotic desire and the male gaze in this subversive and still controversial serial-killer drama. Frannie Avery (Meg Ryan) is an introverted English teacher and writer who witnesses a man and woman engaged in a sexual act in a local bar. After the woman turns up dead, Frannie is questioned by a homicide detective (Mark Ruffalo) who pulls her into an erotic encounter of her own. But as more victims turn up, the question of the killer’s identity comes dangerously close to home.
