Created by Arturo Ripstein in partnership with his wife and close colleague, screenwriter Paz Alicia Garcíadiego, The Woman of the Port adapts a short story by Guy de Maupassant that already had been turned into a scandalous 1934 Mexican hit film by Arcady Boytler. Recounted from three perspectives, the story intertwines the struggles of a sailor who abandons ship and seeks shelter in a brothel, the beautiful young prostitute he becomes involved with, and the older prostitute who knows they are siblings and her own children.
