The World
Sep 20—22, 2026
Directed by Jia Zhang-ke (2004)
With
Zhao Tao, Cheng Taishen, Jue Jing, Jiang Zhongwei
The World was inspired by a conversation between director Jia Zhang-ke and star Zhao Tao (Caught by the Tides) about the latter’s experience working as a dancer at Shenzhen’s “Window of The World,” a theme park filled with miniature versions of international landmarks. In his first film made with the approval of the Chinese government, Jia explores the role of theme parks in altering contemporary national identity-construction, and blurring the line between reality and fantasy. Following a cast of rural migrants working at the park in the early 20th century, he depicts their experience of faux freedom in a pointed commentary on the implications of globalization.
