With
Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani, Mélissa Boros, Emma Mackey, Finnegan Oldfield, Louai El Amrousy
Life swiftly starts to unravel for Alpha and her single mom after the rebellious 13-year-old comes home with a stick-and-poke tattoo made with a used needle at a house party—a mark that may be related to a contagious blood-borne disease that turns its victims into disintegrating stone. The third feature by French director and screenwriter Julia Ducournau, winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for Titane, is a mysterious, unsettling allegory for the 1980s AIDS crisis and the waves of hysteria, prejudice, and exclusion it produced.
