Directed by Lizzie Borden (1983)
With
Honey, Adele Bertei, Jean Satterfield, Florynce Kennedy, Pat Murphy, Kathryn Bigelow
Set 10 years after a revolution that supposedly transformed the country into a social-democratic utopia, Lizzie Borden’s prescient postpunk provocation features a band of radicals—led by Black, lesbian, and working-class women—who fight back in a world where racism, sexism, and inequality are still the norm. Delivering a mix of TV newscasts, pirate-radio transmissions, and street-protest footage, Born in Flames conveys the incandescent rage of time when it was made, while also uncannily predicting the fragility and fragmentation of progressive movements to come.
