Directed by Wong Kar-wai (2004)
With
Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Gong Li, Faye Wong
Written, directed, and produced by Wong Kar-wai, 2046 picks up loose ends from two previous Wong features, Days of Being Wild (1990) and In the Mood for Love (2000), with Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung reprising their respective roles as writer Chow Mo-wan and his lost soulmate, Su Li-zhen. Named for the apartment in which Chow and Su connected, 2046 weaves together four disparate narratives about the romantic affairs Chow pursues while writing science fiction (with beautifully realized scenes pulled from his pulp sci-fi novels), gambling, and trying to move on. “A puzzle, a valentine, a sacred hymn to beauty… and a cynical shrug of the shoulders at the damned impermanence of it all, 2046 is a movie to live in,” Glenn Kenny declared in Premiere.
