The Spook Who Sat by the Door

Jun 5—8, 2026
    Part of
  • Black Cops, Spies and Overseers
  • and
  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by Ivan Dixon (1973)
With Lawrence Cook, Paula Kelly, Janet League, J. A. Preston, David Lemieux
One of the most radical, revolutionary statements in film history, Ivan Dixon’s explosive adaptation of the novel by Sam Greenlee follows the fictional first Black CIA agent (Lawrence Cook), who uses his specialized training to build a guerrilla army intent on government overthrow. So potent is the film’s call to revolution that it was pulled from theaters within days of opening.

Join us for a discussion and book signing with series curator Steven W. Thrasher, freelance culture critic Soraya Nadia McDonald, and New York Magazine culture writer Craig Jenkins after the screening on June 5.
