Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (1976)
In Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s bold cinematic parable, the owner of a Havana sugar plantation attempts to teach Christianity to his enslaved workers by staging a recreation of the Biblical Last Supper. But when the enslaved refuse to be proselytized and learn that the Count has reneged on his compensatory promises, the film spirals into a darkly ironic critique of colonialism and religion, while showing the resistance of Black peoples.
