Directed by Gloria Rolando (1997)
After escaping from prison in 1979, the revolutionary, thinker, and Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader Assata Shakur found political asylum in Cuba, where she lived in exile for over 40 years. Gloria Rolando’s Eyes of the Rainbow finds Shakur in Havana discussing life before and after exile and her own Afro-Cuban roots. Weaving together Shakur’s spiritual connection to the Yoruba Orisha Oya, her militant political commitments and an Afro-diasporic tapestry of music, Rolando dedicated the documentary to “all women who struggle for a better world.”
Assata Sharkur joined the ancestors on September 25, 2025 and the screening will be an occasion for remembrance centered on her lifelong devotion to freedom from all forms of oppression. The screening will be followed by a conversation with series programmer Yasmina Price, organizer Monifa Bandele and filmmaker Yaania Bell about collective struggle, memory, and the intertwinement of culture and militancy.
