Directed by Nicolás Guillén Landrián
This program of five short films offers an introduction to the subversive Cuban experimental filmmaker and painter Nicolás Guillén Landrián.

En un bario Viejo (1963)
9min, digital

Life in one of Havana's old neighborhoods is captured on film

Los del baile (1965)
6min, digital

People dance to a performance by Pello el Afrokán’s Orchestra in this short video essay. Like P.M., the government censored Los del baile for presenting an “undesirable” image of Havana nightlife.

Ociel del Toa (1965)
17min, digital

A poetic rendering of the lives of the people who inhabit the banks of the Toa River in Cuba’s Oriente province.

Reportaje (1966)
19min, SD file

A group of the Cuban poor convene to discuss politics and eventually set a large rag-doll ablaze in an act of collective exorcism.

Coffea Arábiga (1968)
18min, digital

Commissioned by the government to produce a propaganda film on Cuban coffee, Landrián smuggled dissent into the project, turning it into a cinematic Trojan horse which drew a ban after the so-called Cuban “coffee plan” fell apart.

Taller de Linea y 18 (1971)
15min, SD file

Landrián’s first project to feature conventional documentary-style narration offers audiences a glimpse inside the workings of a bustling Havana factory.
