“A thorough reworking of the Hollywood plantation mythos”
—The Village Voice
—The Village Voice
Maluala takes us into a palenque—a fortified settlement of escaped slaves—hidden in Cuba’s eastern mountains, as the Spanish colonial forces attempt to sow discord among their leaders. The film marks Giral’s third entry into his trilogy of films about slavery in 19th-century Cuba and the Caribbean, combining a Marxist lens with the long arc of Black Liberation to trace the development from individual to collective struggle.
