The butterfly effect gets cranked to maximum volume in this pumping, thumping kinetic 1998 thriller from director Tom Tykwer. When small-time German criminal Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) accidentally leaves 100,000 DM of his boss’s money in a subway car, he phones his girlfriend Lola (Franka Potente) for help. Given 20 minutes to replace his loss before he sticks up a store, Lola sprints through the streets of Berlin to raise the money by any means necessary—with three small variations in her route resulting in wildly different outcomes. Tykwer also created the film’s headlong rush of a score in collaboration with Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil.
