Directed by Ousmane William Mbaye (2024)
Ndar—the original name of the Senegalese capital Saint-Louis—lies on an island at the mouth of the Senegal River in the former Waalo kingdom, and served as a key port of colonial expansion into West Africa four centuries ago. As an economic, cultural, and political crossroads, the city became a laboratory for France’s so-called “civilizing mission,” where commerce, urban planning, education, and racial mixing were used to assimilate local populations and consolidate colonial power. Today, Saint-Louis holds a complex legacy: while some residents acknowledge this history and maintain longstanding Saint-Louisian traditions, others call for a decisive break from its colonial past. For many young people in particular, the moment demands a new way of thinking about history.
