The Woman Who Poked The Leopard (2025)
Dir. Patience Nitumwesiga
With Stella Nyanzi, Baraka Bah, Kato Bah, Wasswa Bah
108min; DCP
Uganda, South Africa, Germany, US
US Premiere
An outspoken poet, scholar, and activist, Dr. Stella Nyanzi has become one of the most uncompromising voices of resistance in Uganda. After publicly criticizing President Yoweri Museveni online, she was arrested in 2018 and imprisoned, where severe mistreatment led to the loss of her pregnancy. Undeterred, she returned to the public arena in 2020 to campaign for parliament, challenging Museveni’s continued rule. A radical feminist and advocate for queer rights in a country where homosexuality is criminalized, Nyanzi faces constant harassment from authorities determined to silence dissent. Interweaving footage from the campaign trail with archival scenes of protest and repression, alongside intimate moments with her three teenage children, the story reveals both Uganda’s fraught political landscape and the personal toll borne by those who dare to resist.
