Deja Vu

Assigned to find evidence in the aftermath of an explosion on a New Orleans ferry, ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) is taken to a top-secret government lab that uses experimental time-shifting equipment to identify perpetrators and prevent tragedies. Exploring the themes of surveillance, safety, and loss that define so many films of the era—all the while riffing on Hitchcock’s Vertigo and fatalistic detective stories—Scott and Washington create a quieter, sadder film than one might anticipate from the pulpy concept.
