Taking of Pelham 123

Apr 11—15, 2026
    Part of
  • Hoyt-Schermerhorn: Stand Clear of the Closing Doors
  • and
  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by Tony Scott (2009)
With Denzel Washington, John Travolta, John Turturro, Luis Guzmán, Michael Rispoli, James Gandolfini
The third, and most recent, adaptation of John Godey’s 1973 novel, Taking of Pelham 123 charts one of the most iconic subway stories ever put to film. When ‘Ryder’ (Travolta) and his accomplices hijack a 6 train, dispatcher Walter Garber (Washington) is thrust into the position of negotiator. Despite the 6 train setting, most of the film was shot on the track between Hoyt-Schermerhorn and the Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn. With a roster of iconic New York/Jersey actors, Scott’s adaptation—arriving near the end of his visually and editorially baroque late period—thrusts a timeless story into the modern era.
