The Pawnbroker

Apr 12 & 13, 2026
    Part of
  • Hoyt-Schermerhorn: Stand Clear of the Closing Doors
  • and
  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by Sidney Lumet (1964)
With Rod Steiger, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Brock Peters, Jaime Sánchez
Lumet investigates the reverberations of the Holocaust two decades later in this haunting depiction of a life altered in its wake. Numb from his experience in a concentration camp, Sol Nazerman (Steiger) lives a life emotionally alienated from those around him in a heartbreaking portrayal of post-Holocaust life. Marking Morgan Freeman’s feature film debut, it’s also Lumet’s first film to shoot at Hoyt-Schermerhorn ahead of 1978’s The Wiz, and one of the major contributors to the deterioration of the Production Code throughout the ‘60s.
