King Lear
Sun, Mar 15, 2026
Directed by Peter Brook (1971)
With
Paul Scofield, Irene Worth, Susan Engel, Anne-Lise Gabold
Peter Brook leans into the wintry bleakness and cruelty that suffuse Shakespeare’s great tragedy about an aged king, shot in 16mm black-and-white and mostly made in Denmark’s dune country. Paul Scofield plays the lead in an interpretation that positions Lear as kin to Beckett’s absurdist theater. Writing for The New York Times, Vincent Canby called Brook’s cinematic realization "an exalting Lear, full of exquisite terror."
