Directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho (2001)
With Selton Mello, Raul Cortez, Juliana Carneiro da Cunha, Simone Spoladore
Winner of more than 50 international awards, To the Left of the Father is Luiz Fernando Carvalho’s “auspicious feature debut” (Variety). Based on the 1975 novel Lavoura Arcaica (“Ancient Tillage”) by award-winning writer Raduan Nassar, the film focuses on the relationship between a young Lebanese-Brazilian man, André (Mello), and his family, led by a brutal, hyper-religious patriarch (Cortez). After running away from his countryside home, he is confronted by an older brother determined to convince him to return. Torn apart by an unresolved incestuous attraction to his younger sister, André must grapple with the prospect of trading his personal freedom for the sake of his tradition-bound family.
