Duck Soup

May 8—12, 2026
    Part of
  • Pynchonesque
  • and
  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by Leo McCarey (1933)
With Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx, Zeppo Marx, Margaret Dumont, Raquel Torres, Louis Calhern
In this classic from the Marx Brothers, Groucho plays Rufus T. Firefly, newly-named dictator of bankrupt (and fictional) Freedonia. Relations with Sylvania begin to deteriorate, in part due to the antics of the nation’s two inept spies, portrayed by Chico and Harpo, sending the two nations on a path towards war. The Marx Brothers—and their equally whimsical and deadpan slapstick—were a tangible inspiration on Pynchon, often referenced in his novels.
