In 1840, hardworking farmer Jabez Stone is broke and plagued by seemingly pre-ordained bad luck. After a series of mishaps cement his tough streak, his impulsive declaration that he would sell his soul to the devil manifests the personification of evil himself (a mischievous, terrifying Walter Huston—who also plays the eponymous role in D. W. Griffith’s Abraham Lincoln) offering good luck in exchange.
