All That Money Can Buy (AKA The Devil and Daniel Webster)

Jul 2—6, 2026
    Part of
  • Spectres, Devils, and Bad Blood in Old America
  • and
  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by William Dieterle (1941)
With Edward Arnold, Walter Huston, James Craig, Anne Shirley
In 1840, hardworking farmer Jabez Stone is broke and plagued by seemingly pre-ordained bad luck. After a series of mishaps cement his tough streak, his impulsive declaration that he would sell his soul to the devil manifests the personification of evil himself (a mischievous, terrifying Walter Huston—who also plays the eponymous role in D. W. Griffith’s Abraham Lincoln) offering good luck in exchange. As Stone’s ill-begotten luck improves and his wealth mounts, he transforms into an increasingly sinister husband, son, and community member. Originally released as All That Money Can Buy but later dubbed The Devil and Daniel Webster, this supernatural thriller unpacks the nefarious nature of wealth.
