  • BAM Film 2026
Directed by Jonathan Demme (1998)
With Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, Kimberly Elise, Thandiwe Newton, LisaGay Hamilton
Based on Toni Morrison’s 1987 novel of the same name, Demme’s Gothic horror take on one of contemporary literature’s most enduring stories is teeming with the notes that made its original text so moving: emotional, powerful, and haunting. The tale of a formerly enslaved woman plagued by a poltergeist and fantastically revisited by a reincarnated daughter, Beloved marries magical realism with the material tragedy of America’s past.
