With
Kofi Ghanaba, Oyafunmike Ogunlano, Alexandra Duah
Mona, an American model on a photo shoot in Ghana, is transported back in time, forced to experience the agony of her ancestors as an enslaved woman. As her ordeal forces her to confront a tragic past, Mona deepens her understanding with her roots and lineage, a connection she had previously left unnurtured. In Ghana’s Akan language, “Sankofa” means “to go back and get;” Gerima’s film serves as a powerful reminder and cautionary tale to members of the African diaspora to always keep the lessons of the past within arm’s reach.
