“This year’s Word. Sound. Power. celebrates and pays homage to the voices from the continent and its Diaspora—from origins to the innovators.”

For spoken-word, magnetic emcees, and heart-thumping beats, there’s nothing quite like Word. Sound. Power. For its 22nd year, the celebration of hip-hop culture returns, another rhythmic commemoration of the storied relationship between spoken word and our beloved borough. In honor of DanceAfrica 50, this year centers voices from the African Diaspora, amplifying their artistry across generations and communities. Join us for a weekend showcase of word, rhyme, and rhythm.
The Word. Sound. Power. Anthology highlights voices from our Word. Sound. Power. in the Classroom NYC school residency program, in which students work with BAM Teaching Artists to learn about poetry and craft their own. You can read the written works of residency students in the anthology here.
