Dionosio Pinzón, an impoverished villager afflicted with a withered hand, restores an injured rooster to health and starts pitting it in cockfights. When the bird proves a winner, Dionosio’s fortunes appear to have changed, until sudden wealth proves to be a trap of another kind. Based on a story by Mexican author Juan Rulfo, The Realm of Fortune was Ripstein’s first collaboration with his future wife, screenwriter Paz Alicia Garcíadiego, launching a profound new chapter in Ripstein’s cinema.
