Directed by Martin Ritt (1972)
With Cicely Tyson, Paul Winfield, Kevin Hooks
Ritt’s 1972 historical drama follows the Morgans, a Black sharecropper family in Louisiana, struggling in the aftermath of their patriarch’s imprisonment. Anchored by a blues soundtrack from Taj Mahal, this moving portrait of life during the Great Depression netted screenwriter Lonne Elder III an Oscar nod, becoming the first Black writer to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.
